The Learning Commons supports and enhances student learning, writing, research, numeracy, and use of technology at the University of Guelph. Through collaborative partnerships, we provide expertise, services and resources to support the University's strategic goal of being a learner-centred and research-intensive institution.
In pursuit of this mission, we:
- Recognize the Library as a central gathering place for student study and research
- Adopt a coherent and seamless approach to academic support services through the collaborative efforts of librarians, staff, peer helpers, and student consultants
- Support students in developing the cognitive and information-seeking skills necessary in a knowledge-based society
- Foster attitudes, approaches, and values which promote a love of learning, an appreciation for academic integrity, and life-long learning
- Promote the importance of information technology by helping students to understand and use it effectively as a learning tool
- Respond to diverse learner needs by offering services in multiple formats including individual and group assistance, workshops, in-class presentations, facilitated study groups, and help desks
- Enhance students' accessibility to information and learning opportunities through the development of a range of print and Web-based resources
- Collaborate with faculty, TAs, and staff to enhance student learning and improve academic performance
- Serve as a resource to the campus community in developing and assessing new learning tools, strategies, and pedagogical approaches to enrich the academic experiences of students
Guiding Principles
These principles speak to a shared commitment to work in a collaborative environment and guide us as we implement the Learning Commons' mission:
Learning
We base our work on sound scholarship, learning from the best practices of others, and the use of knowledge and skills to develop and improve as individuals and as an organization.
Innovation
We embrace creative ways to fulfill our mission by encouraging flexibility, risk-taking, forward thinking, and an openness to new ideas and practices to vitalize our work.
Collegiality
We strive to be a diverse community in which the ideas, expertise, and perspectives of each individual are valued and respected.
Collaboration
We create and capitalize on opportunities to work with students, faculty and staff within the institution and with members in the community to advance the Learning Commons mission and mandate.
Accountability
We design, develop, and deliver programs and services that are accessible, relevant and effective, and where outcomes are regularly assessed to ensure continuous improvement.
